Moving In
Buying your first home can initially be overwhelming af. Not even gonna lie. There’s all the trips to the bank or loan office, the 50 million documents that need to signed, financial language that sounds like Klingon, and at one point for us, there was a long period of silence from all parties that sent us into a spiral of anxiety. We’re here to tell you, however, that all of that was very much worth it.
Over the last year and a half, we have loved making our first home truly “ours”. The original state of the house wasn’t very impressive but Rene and I both saw so much potential in it.
At this point we both knew our passion for interior design would bleed into this home and we couldn’t wait to get to work.
We closed on the house on May 19, 2017 but before moving in we figured we’d make our lives easier and start with painting and installing brand new flooring since the house, aside from kitchen and baths, was fully carpeted.
Due to some miscommunication with the previous owners our power was shut off the day of the closing and since we closed on a Friday after 5pm we couldn’t even contact the utility company to request service. May in South Carolina, as many of you know, is the first official month of summer so we painted our house in almost 90-degree weather with no air conditioning that same weekend. Over the next couple of days, we painted away with the help of family, friends, two 24 packs of water bottles, and several pizzas.
Once the painting was done it was time for the floors. Turns out that this a much longer process than HGTV makes its seem like it is. Since we weren’t doing the install ourselves we had to get an estimate from Home Depot which meant waiting a week for that to happen, then order the materials and wait for those to come in (another week), and then schedule the install which, as you’ve probably already guessed, meant another week of waiting. Finally, we watched the whole thing come together in about 2 days and 1000 square feet of beautiful new laminate flooring.
On June 9 we’ve had enough of waiting to enjoy our new home, so we borrowed an inflatable mattress from Rene’s parents and slept in our new master bedroom with just a lamp on the floor. We had a full weekend of moving ahead of us but we couldn’t have been happier.
Overall, we are huge believers that the places we live, work, and thrive in should resonate beauty, have a sense of purpose, and as one Marie Kondo would say “spark joy!”. As some of you may already know, we have completed a few other projects on the house. Stick around and you will get a look into some of our additional endeavors and continuous life adventures. We can’t wait to continue sharing and hope that along the way we might inspire you and hear about some of your ventures too!
